What are Pressure Garments?
If you’ve never heard of a Pressure Garment, consider yourself lucky! It is an elastic body suit, worn like a second skin, which helps burn patients heal, and keeps scars from forming. There is a lot of research showing that the longer a patient wears a Pressure Garment, the less scars he or she will have. We recently interviewed Benny Shapira, manager of the plastic and reconstruction division of AMI, the company that distributes medical devices here in Israel. Pressure Garments are over 50 years old and their success is world renowned. Manufactured in England, they are made to the exact measurements of a burn patient. It takes about 7 days to make the Pressure Garment and send it to Israel.
Did you know that in Israel, children comprise 70% of burn victims ? You can imagine how hard it might be to get a child to wear their Pressure Garment for a long time. Yet it is vitally important that they do! That is why Pressure Garments for children and teens come in many colors and styles. But Pressure Garments are not cheap! They cost about $1800- yes, dollars, not shekels! Adults need two at a time, and growing children frequently outgrow their Pressure Garments and require new ones. The Chaya Malka Burn Foundation is proud of our work raising money to help families pay for Pressure Garments.
